'Rehab: An American Scandal'

Presented By
Shoshana Walter with Christopher Leonard

Pulitzer Prize finalist Shoshana Walter joins investigative journalist Christopher Leonard or a discussion of her new book, Rehab: An American Scandal, about the country’s failed response to the opioid crisis, and the malfeasance, corruption, and snake oil that blight the drug rehabilitation industry.

Four poignant stories illustrate the pitfalls of America’s flawed drug rehabilitation system and offer insight into how the system itself might be rehabbed to save lives.

Walter is based in Oakland, California, and covers the criminal justice system for the Marshall Project. She’s the recipient of the Knight Award for Public Service, two Edward R. Murrow Awards, and a Livingston Award for Young Journalists. She has been published by The New York Times Magazine, various newspapers, and by NPR stations across the country.

Leonard is the Kansas City-based author of three books, including the bestselling Kochland: The Secret History of Koch Industries and Corporate Power in America. He has bylines in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, and Bloomberg Businessweek.

This program is part of the Watchdog Writers Group series and co-presented by the Missouri School of Journalism, housed at the University of Missouri in Columbia, where Leonard serves as director.
