RISE Course Descriptions
Designed for students who are just starting to learn English. Basics 1 covers simple present grammar, common vocabulary groups (e.g., numbers and money), and beginning phonics, focusing on individual letter sounds and some consonant-vowel-consonant words such as CAT or RIG. It is accessible even for students with no formal schooling. Basics 2 expands into more advanced grammar, vocabulary, and phonics while still being appropriate for a beginner. Students attend twice per week.
Designed to help students prepare for the U.S. Naturalization oral and written exams. The class covers all 128 USCIS Civics Questions and allows students to practice their reading, writing, and speaking. This class is best suited for learners at the intermediate to advanced level. Students attend once per week.
Focused on conversation practice with other learners and native English speakers (volunteer tutors). There are typically at least 3 sessions per week; students are encouraged to attend a time that works best for their schedule. Each class is self-contained, so they are not missing crucial content if they must miss one week. Students typically attend one session per week.
Designed for students who are interested in starting a CNA course but are looking to build more confidence in their speaking and reading abilities, as well as get more acquainted with the advanced coursework. This class teaches common medical terminology and allows plenty of time to practice reading and speaking with classmates and volunteer tutors. Students attend once per week.
Teaches English words and phrases used in the Missouri Driver's License written exam. It does not teach practical driving skills. This class is best suited to students who speak and understand English at an intermediate level. Students attend once per week.
Teaches four common English verb tenses: simple present, simple past, present progressive, and simple future. This class is appropriate for a student who has already completed English Basics or is otherwise at an early intermediate level but wants to build confidence in their grammar skills. Students attend once per week.
