Plaza Branch and Central Library will open late at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 due to the Kansas City Marathon.
KCUR 89.3 podcast host Mackenzie Martin leads a discussion about how historic preservation works in Kansas City. Panelists include Amanda Loughlin of Heritage Consulting Group, Ethan Starr of Historic Kansas City, Zach Molzer of Molzer Development, and Michael Wells of the Library’s Missouri Valley Special Collections.
Historic preservation across the United States has evolved considerably since the mid-19th century, reflecting changing ideas about what places are worthy of protection and why. Public awareness and advocacy play an important role in that process, helping determine which buildings and sites are preserved — and, just as importantly, which are lost.
Learn how places are identified as historically significant, how advocates build public support for threatened sites, and how developers navigate preservation requirements and economic incentives to give historic buildings a new life.
The program is co-sponsored by Janette Yost of Meantime Magazine, a quarterly magazine exploring Kansas City art, architecture, and memory. Attendees have an opportunity to learn more about the publication and place pre-orders for upcoming issues and subscriptions.
