Kansas City Public Library Appoints New Director of Central Library Operations
(Kansas City, Mo.) – The Kansas City Public Library is pleased to announce Ruby Jones as the new director of operations for the Central Library. The previous director, Teresa Bolton, retired in 2025 after 12 years of service with the Library.
“Our staff is passionate about helping patrons,” said Jones, “and I look forward to supporting their innovation and impact on an even greater scale.”
In 2022, Jones joined the Central Library as the manager of information and references services, where she oversaw key public-facing services to ensure a welcoming presence for all patrons. She has served as interim Central Library director since Bolton’s departure. Jones has worked at libraries for two decades, including previous roles at the Omaha Public Library, Lewiston Public Library, and Maine State Library.
“I am honored to serve the downtown community and KCPL staff as we continue offering dynamic programming, including our lunchtime music series, 101 Series, and Film Vault screenings,” she said. “I’m excited to expand our language services, like adding a bilingual Spanish-English storytime, and to welcome visitors who want to explore what our Central Library has to offer.”
This month marks the 22nd anniversary of the Library’s opening in the former First National Bank building. Today, the Central Library houses the OneNorth technology center, Missouri Valley Special Collections, two art galleries, and other major departments on its five floors. Patrons enjoy visiting this location for a game of chess on the rooftop terrace, an afternoon in the Grand Reading Room, storytimes in the Children’s Library, and major events like the Heartland Book Festival and Signature Event speaker series.
“During her time at the Library, Ruby has proved to be a steady, thoughtful leader,” said Joel Jones, deputy director for Library services. “She builds strong relationships, understands day-to-day operations, and brings creative ideas for new and improved services. Her calm, consistent approach supports both staff and patrons, and she is a great fit to lead the Central Library as we begin implementing the Library’s new Strategic Plan.”
Ruby Jones says she looks forward to welcoming Kansas City residents and visitors downtown to the Central Library.
